Description

The Dramatic Arts department of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts began originally as a division of the English Department in 1968. As the division grew the Drama Department became an independent department and then expanded to include film and later grew to being part of a fine arts umbrella group that included drama, film, music, theatre and visual arts. The fledgling department attracted talented set designers, directors and lighting experts, including Warren Hartman, Robert Rooney, Don Acaster, John Barrett, Mary Jane Miller, Des Davis, Peter Boretski, Leslie O’Dell, Gregson Winkfield, Peter Feldman, Glenys McQueen-Fuentes and others. A chronology of departmental titles: English Department, Drama Division (1968-1970) English and Drama (1970-1973) Department of Drama (1973-1978) (from 1977 included Film Studies content) Drama and Film Studies (1979-1982) Fine Arts (includes drama, film, music, theatre, visual arts) (1983-1989) Film Studies, Dramatic and Visual Arts (1989-1999) Fine Arts (includes dramatic and visual arts) (1999-2002) Dramatic Arts (2002-present) (from 2002 to present part of the School of Fine and Performing Arts, later renamed the Marilyn I. In previous years, the spring festival consisted of participation based on the following criteria: fourth year students wrote the plays, third year students directed and designed, second year students performed and first year students built and crewed the sets.
