Description
The largest, most modern paper company in the world was owned by the Great Lakes Paper Company. It started out in 1942 as a pulp mill in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario. Energy prices and wood fiber costs affected the company and in 1974 the company was acquired by Canadian Pacific Limited. They changed the name of the company to Great Lakes Forest Products. Another amalgamation took place with the Canadian International Paper Company and the name of the company was changed again. It became Canadian Pacific Forest Products which later became Avenor. In 1988, Bowater acquired the company and it became Bowater Forest Products. Another merger took place in 2007 in which Bowater and Abitibi-Consolidated became AbitibiBowater.
