Abstract
A military land grant for Richard Leonard of Stamford Township, a Major of the 104th Regiment. The grant is for 200 acres in the Township of Sidney, County of Hastings, Midland District, and is dated September 25, 1818. A seal is attached to the grant. There are several signatures on the grant, but most are illegible. One appears to be J.B. Robinson, [Att. Genl.].
Description
Richard Leonard was a member of the 104th Regiment of the British Army. The Regiment was based in New Brunswick, but marched to Kingston (and two flank companies to Niagara) during the winter of 1813 to reinforce troops there. Leonard fought during the War of 1812 at Sackett’s Harbour, Lundy’s Lane and Fort Erie. After the war he settled at Lundy’s Lane and was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 1st Lincoln Militia. He later became the Sheriff of Niagara. He died in 1833 and is buried in the Drummond Hill Cemetery.
