Commemorative Coins

Abstract

There are four commemorative coins in varying sizes. The first is a "Niagara souvenir" and is a replica of a "Brock token". The short description that accompanies the coin reads "The Brock tokens circulated in Upper Canada around 1813-1816. They were struck in memory of General Sir Isaac Brock, who fell in the Battle of Queenston Heights on 13 October 1812. The coin reads "Sir Isaac Brock the Hero of Upper Canada". The second coin is a half-penny token that shows an image of a sailing vessel. The motto reads "Success to the commerce of Upper Canada". The accompanying card reads "half-penny token struck for general circulation in Upper Canada, about 1816. The token is one of a few issues which commemorate Sir Isaac Brock. The name Brock is misspelled 'Brook on this token." It was not issued by the Canadian government or a Canadian merchant, but by enterprising Americans. The third coin is larger in size and shows the profile of General Sir Isaac Brock and the other side shows a scene from the Battle of Queenston Heights. The coin reads "General Sir Isaac Brock by his heroic example had shown the way to victory." The fourth coin is a "trade dollar" and was produced by the Niagara Falls Canada Chamber of Commerce. The coin shows a profile image of Sir Isaac Brock and the Brock monument next to the Falls.
