Abstract

An orderly book of the Massachusetts militia at Lanesborough. The entries in the book are dated from May 1811 to 1836. Various other entries are included throughout the book with dates ranging from 1862 to 1868. The Captain of the militia unit is Samuel Northam. Entries include muster rolls, regimental orders, and parades.

The entry dated August 12, 1812 concerns division inspections by the Major General and ends with the following “Recent event fully justify impression[?] which has long been entertained that the Militia must be…in the first stages[?] of any war in which the U. States may be engaged. Major General cannot forbear[?] to call in the most earnest manner upon the officers & soldiers of this division to discharge the duties of the honored stations which they hold as… soldiers of the State of Massachusetts & he relies with the utmost confidence…with which the Militia will…obey the commands in resisting the first encroachment of an invading[?] force”.
