Abstract
Fonds consists mostly of correspondence addressed to members of the Stewart family including John Stewart, Cynthia Stewart, Ira Stewart, Hon. Dugald Stewart, Gov. J.W. Stewart and Noble Stewart. There are also several letters addressed to others including Mrs. George A. Allen, Cynthia Hubbell, and Philip Battelle. A recipe book dated 1817 is also included as well as a few legal documents.
Description
John Stewart (1745-1829) was born in Londonberry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He fought in the French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years War, and was present at the taking of Montreal in 1760. After the war he moved to Bennington, Vermont, and enrolled in the “Green Mountain Corps”, which defended the people of Vermont from New Yorkers who made claims to land in western Vermont. He later served in the Revolutionary War. He settled at Ticonderoga and maintained an Inn, and later moved to Burlington and Middlebury, Vermont. He was married to Huldah Hubbell Stewart and had several children, including Noble, Cynthia, Aaron, and Ira.
