dc.description.abstract	A letter written by Sir John A. Macdonald to Senator McCallum 28 December 1880 reads: "I have your favour of the 27th inst. The vacancy was discussed in Council some time ago and is practically settled although it won't be announced for sometime. None of us had the slightest idea that you asked to get out of the Commons where you can't well be spared. I shall talk over this matter with you when we meet.
