Abstract

A black and white photograph of the construction of the Miniature Railway at Crystal Beach amusement park. The photo was taken in winter and shows several wagons pulled by horses lined up. The train station can be seen in the background, with the sign “Miniature Railway” posted on it.

Description

The miniature railway at Crystal Beach amusement park was built around the turn of the century. The original train is believed to have been a 15” gauge Cagney steam locomotive, 4-4-0 design. In 1948 it was replaced by an 18” gauge diesel outline train from the Allan Herschell Company. The final train in the park was a 1963 model from Chance Rides of Wichita, Kansas. It was powered by a Ford 4 Cylinder gas motor. It hauled 4 coaches and was equipped with air brakes. The train was privately owned, and when Crystal Beach amusement park closed around 1989, the train was moved to a private site in Niagara Falls. When the property owner sold his house, the train was sold to Puddicombe Farms in Winona. The train takes visitors through orchards, vineyards and waterways on the farm and continues to operate.
