Anyone can visit the Brock University Library's Archives & Special Collections to conduct research using the St. Catharines Standard and Niagara Falls Review Fonds. There are some things to know before visiting:
- The Archives & Special Collections hours are 9:30 to 4:30 from Monday to Friday. Appointments for visits are encouraged, as we often host classes and events that temporarily close the Archives to the public. Email archives@brocku.ca to make an appointment.
- The Archives staff are unable to look up articles and photos for you. To access the collection, you have to visit the Brock University Library.
- The newspaper collection is going to take years to organize and describe fully. Be patient if you cannot find what you are looking for quickly.
- The collection prominently focuses on the people and news relating to the Niagara area. However, this is not a collection of every article and photograph that has ever been published. These were working research files for the newspapers' staff and some topics can be incomplete.
- The files do not include announcements (births/marriages/deaths/anniversaries), sports, and classified ads extensively. And broader stories at the national and international levels can be found through other resources.
- Complete runs of both newspapers can be found in the Microfilm Room on the 5th floor of the Brock University Library which is open during the James A. Gibson Library's daily hours.
- For the photograph archives of the St. Catharines Standard from the 1930s to the 1990s, contact or visit the St. Catharines Museum & Welland Canals Centre. For the photograph archives of the Niagara Falls Review from the 1950s to 2000s, contact or visit the Local History Room of Niagara Falls Public Library on Victoria Street.
We have been carefully arranging and describing these files to provide quick access. Linked here are a few of the completed finding aids that will help people locate records. Finding aids coming soon.
